The Weather and Climate of Bangkok

Heat and humidity are in equal abundance in Bangkok, and that's true practically year round. At various times, Bangkok has been named the hottest major city in the world; the title is misleading, though, since it's not always scorching hot in Bangkok. The reason it's earned that reputation probably has to do with the fact that it doesn't really cool down at night in Bangkok; it's usually just as hot and humid in the evening as it is at midday. The unrelenting nature of the heat and humidity in Bangkok is what usually sticks in visitors' minds.

Although temperatures remain quite consistent throughout the year, the two hottest periods are in April and May and in September and October. Southwest monsoons roll in between May and October, offering a welcome reprieve from the worst of the heat and humidity. The coolest time of year in Bangkok is during the months of December and January. These months are known as the "cold months," and evenings are especially pleasant during this time of year.

Travelers who would like to miss the worst weather should avoid visiting Bangkok in March and May. These are the hottest and steamiest months of the year, and roaming around the city can be a positively miserable experience. Those who do venture here during those months should make it a point to spend lots of time beside the pool, at rooftop bars and inside the city's many air-conditioned shopping malls.
